Sophomore runners Octavio Moreno and Giovanni
Barajas-Ramirez qualify for CCCAA SoCal Finals
Sophomore Octavio Moreno
earned the Dons its first hurdles
win since 2006 with a first-place
finish in the 400-meters hurdles
in the Orange Empire Conference
finals April 26.
Moreno ran a personal best 53.56
seconds earning a spot in the 2019
California Community College
Athlete Association SoCal Trials on
May 4 where he placed seventh
overall and second in his heat,
qualifying him for the CCCAA SoCal
Finals on Saturday.
“I’ve been working on this for two
years. Last year, as a freshman, I
came in third, so my goal for this
year was to become conference

champion,” Moreno said.
Earlier in the day, Moreno placed
fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with
a time of 15.57 seconds, narrowly
missing a podium finish by .01 of a
second.
Octavio knew when it came to the
400-meter race, if he could stick
with the leaders, he could pull out
a win. He paced himself throughout
the race and fell to fourth place
around the 200-meter mark. But he
accelerated and entered his final
kick 100-meters from the finish line.
“I told coach at the beginning
of the day that if I am close at the
200-meter mark, I know I got this,”
Moreno said.
