STATE PROPOSITIONS

BALLOT MEASURES

In the longest list of ballot measures since 2000 , on Tuesday

California residents will vote on a range of propositions . The ballot measures range from background checks for purchasing ammunition to the reformation and repeal of the death penalty .
BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR AMMUNITION PURCHASES AND LARGE-CAPACITY AMMUNITION

63 MAGAZINE BAN INITIATIVE Would require people purchasing ammunition to first obtain , and pay for , a four-year permit from the California Department of Justice . Dealers would then be required to check this permit before selling ammunition in order to disqualify felons and other prohibited persons from owning firearms .

CALIFORNIA PAROLE FOR NON-VIOLENT CRIMINALS AND JUVENILE COURT TRIAL REQUIREMENTS

57 INITIATIVE Would require inmates convicted of nonviolent felonies to be granted parole after serving time for their main crime . This would also allow the inmates to reduce their sentence with good behavior and educational activities . This initiative would also require a juvenile court judge to decide whether youths aged 14 to 17 be tried as an adult .

CALIFORNIA NON-ENGLISH LANGUAGES ALLOWED IN PUBLIC EDUCATION ACT

58 Would require that public schools are proficient in English . Would require school districts to call on parents and the community to develop material for language acquisition programs and their instruction as rapidly as possible . Allows school districts to create dual language programs for native and non-native English speakers .

MAYORAL CANDIDATES

MIGUEL PULIDO /

INCUMBENT
Incumbent Miguel Pulido is serving his 11th term as Santa Ana mayor . In his official candidate statement , Pulido says he ’ s brought “ proven results ” to the city in the areas of employment , fiscal responsibility , transportation , schools and culture . He says that public safety remains his top priority , and that he is working to hire 100 police officers . Pulido also says that under his watch , city reserves have grown , downtown is thriving , and streets have been improved . Pulido will not be able to be re-elected mayor past 2020 because of term limits .
CONDOMS IN PORNOGRAPHIC FILMS INITIATIVE

60 Would require adult film producers to ensure all performers are following the condom requirements during filming and are posting the requirements at all film sites . It also requires producers to pay for the performers ’ testing , medical examinations and vaccinations .

DRUG PRICE STANDARDS INITIATIVE

61Would prohibit state agencies from paying more — directly or indirectly — for prescription drugs than the lowest price paid for the drug by the U . S . Department of Veterans Affairs , with certain exceptions .

REPEAL OF THE DEATH PENALTY INITIATIVE

62 Would repeal and replace the death penalty with life imprisonment without parole and offenders currently facing the death penalty would be resentenced . It would also increase inmate ’ s wages that may be used as restitution for the victims .

DEATH PENALTY PROCEDURES INITIATIVE

66 The reformation of the death penalty . Allocates the superior court for initial petitions and limits successive petitions . Requires selected attorneys that take noncapital appeals to take death penalty appeals . Excludes prison officials from the regulation process that develops the execution methods .

BENJAMIN VAZQUEZ /

CHALLENGER
Benjamin Vazquez , a community organizer and teacher at Valley High School , is trying to unseat Pulido . Vazquez is running on a platform of community policing , police transparency , affordable housing and investing in youth and families . In a recent candidate forum , Vazquez said that Pulido “ has lost the ability to lead .” In his official candidate statement , Vazquez says he is a Santa Ana native , has worked with multiple organizations , and has helped stage various events including Noche de Altares , Dia del Nino and I Bike Santa Ana .
