CropTop
FASHION THROWBACK
Once a popular ‘90s trend, crop tops are gaining
traction among young women.
“Crop tops are fun and edgy when styled appropriately. Today’s fashion trends have become all about
mixing and matching past fashion trends,” said
Natalie Rivera, a fashion merchandising student.
Originally a garment inspired by the two-piece bikini that was introduced in 1913, it wasn’t until the 1940s that woman began to expose
the navel area, with crop tops remaining a conservative alternative for
outings or pool-side parties.
In the ‘90s, crop tops were popularized once again by pop singer Britney Spears, rocker Gwen Stefani and Latin artist Selena.
“I think it’s extremely interesting how girls in 2015 are mixing the two
iconic decades into outfits of high-waisted bottoms, cropped tops, and
flannels,” said Kyla Benson, Santa Ana College Fashion Design and Merchandising professor.
Seen in other runway shows like Derek Lam, Moschimo and Cushnie
Et Ochs Resort, the crop top has played a huge impact on fashion stores
like Forever 21 and Urban Outfitters this season.

TWITTER FAVORITES
Changes on Twitter angered users
in early November as the familiar
yellow star favorite button was
replaced by a heart-shaped like
button.
The new heart button was met
with backlash as users tweeted
about their discontent with a
change deemed unnecessary.
Tweets mourning the loss of the
favorite button came from celebrities like Andy Richter and from
brands such as Lucky Charms and
The Walking Dead.
A post on Twitter’s blog states
that a heart is a universal symbol
that appeals to people regardless
of culture or language, especially
new users.
