Today’s fashion trends have become all about mixing and matching past fashion trends,” said Natalie Rivera, a fashion merchandising student. Originally a garment inspired by the two-piece bikini that was introduced in 1913, it wasn’t until the 1940s that woman began to expose the navel area, with crop tops remaining a conservative alternative for outings or pool-side parties. In the ‘90s, crop tops were popularized once again by pop singer Britney Spears, rocker Gwen Stefani and Latin artist Selena. “I think it’s extremely interesting how girls in 2015 are mixing the two iconic decades into outfits of high-waisted bottoms, cropped tops, and flannels,” said Kyla Benson, Santa Ana College Fashion Design and Merchandising professor. Seen in other runway shows like Derek Lam, Moschimo and Cushnie Et Ochs Resort, the crop top has played a huge impact on fashion stores like Forever 21 and Urban Outfitters this season. —R.
