INTERVIEWING LAILA ORIBELLO, OUR LANGUAGE ASSISTANT
Q: Have you made many local friends?
A: Yes, I have made many local Friends in Palencia. We meet every Wednesday at a bar called “Oxford”, and some of my friends play for the basketball team in Palencia.
Q: How is your Spanish coming around?
A: Umm… depends on the day! For example, if I speak a lot of Spanish at the “colegio” with “Infantil” and the little kids, my brain is very tired, so my Spanish, at the end of the day, is bad. But if I don’t speak Spanish during the day, at night, my Spanish is better, with my friends… when we go to the bars or somewhere else.
Q: Have you visited the South of Spain? If so, what city? If not, when are you going?
A: By the south of Spain, I think you mean Andalusia, right? So last year, I spent “Semana Santa” in Andalusia. So, I went to so many cities down south, like Granada, I went to Nerja, I went to Málaga. Um, I really like the south of Spain because the weather is so nice! And... I like the Castellano in the South.
Q: Would you live in Spain? Why, why not?
A: Um, yeah, I would live in Spain, if I could live in a big city, like Málaga or Madrid or Barcelona, or even Alicante, I like Alicante a lot. I like the cities and the weather in Spain. And I like the food. If I were to say no, I would say maybe because all my family is far from home in a different country… you know.
Q: So, what was your favourite Spanish food and your least favourite?
A: My favourite Spanish food is, in fact, tortilla, because I could eat tortilla every day. Only if it has onions, though! And I don't like tortilla that is too dry. I like it a little soft. And my least favourite food? Okay. This is a food. I have tried many times. I want to like it, but I can't like it: Morcilla.
Q: Have you travelled to Peru? And would you like to?
A: I have never been to Peru. I would like to go to Peru. Peru is closer to my home in the United States than Spain is, I think. I know anything. You don't know anything. Oh okay.
Q: What's your favourite food from Peru?
A: Um... Actually, okay, this is a story! My first day in Spain, in Palencia. In Palencia, there's a Peruvian restaurant. When I moved to Spain. I didn't know about “siesta”. When I moved to Palencia, my 1st day, the only restaurant opened during Siesta was a Peruvian restaurant. So, I had this Peruvian food for the whole 1st month week that I was in Spain.
Q: What's your favourite video game?
A: My favourite video game? Cooking Mama Two
Q: Imagine you have children in the future. Would you like to bring them to Herrera at some point?
A: Yes! I think I would. In the United States, where I live, Herrera is very, very different from the suburbs or my city. So, if I had kids, it would be interesting for them to see where I used to live, where I worked, the schools. Yeah, I would bring my kids!
Q: Do you have a funny anecdote from your time in Spain?
A: Oh, like a funny, like, memory? So many! Well, when I 1st moved to Spain in Madrid, I missed my train 2 times to Palencia from Madrid because I was in Chamartín, and my train left from Principe Pio. So, I was in Chamartín for like 6 hours, looking for my train. Like, “Where's my train?” And I was so tired from the flight from the US to Spain because it's eight or nine hours. And I was so tired. I couldn't find my train, so then I had to buy 3 train tickets.
Q: What's the theme that you like the most about our class, the 3rd graders?
A: I do love you guys! I think because a lot of you guys are funny and the way that you act and talk is very similar to how me and my friends would act and talk when I was your age in school. So, it reminds me of when I was young. I like that!
Q: Would you like to stay in Spain the rest of your life?
A: I think I love Spain, but I think I would like to have a house in Spain, and then a house in America, because all my family is in America. and I would be really sad If I lived in Spain and I never got to see my family, like, for Christmas or my birthday, I was in Spain alone by myself, you know? So, I think if I had a family in the future, it would be nice to have a house for the summer in Spain and then a house for the winter in America.
Q: Do you think you will come to Spain again?
A: I would say yes. I don't know about going to university or working in Spain because I'm American. It's difficult for me with my Visa, but I would like to come to Spain to visit Herrera and Palencia, and my friends in Madrid, in Barcelona, and there's one community of Spain that I haven't been to: I haven't been to Galicia, and I really want to see it.
Q: What do you think is the most interesting thing of this town?
A: Um... The crab festival? With the guys with the big heads! That's interesting! And I like that everyone knows each other!
Q: Give me the name of one place in Spain, which you haven't visited, and you want to visit.
A: Oh my gosh, Vigo in Galicia. Or what's the other one? Is it, I think it's Oviedo or Orense? I haven’t been to Galicia at all, so that’s where I’d like to go. I would say Vigo, Oviedo and Orense. I also want to visit the islands. I would say Vigo, Oviedo and Orense.
Q: What’s your favourite city in Spain and why?
A: Um… oh, that’s hard! My favourite city might be Málaga. I like the things to do there, and I thought the beaches were cool, but I also think it was too touristy. I also really liked Valencia. There’s a castle there, there is a lot of tourism, but there’s a lot of food to try and things specific to Valencia. If I had to choose based on food, I would say Leon. My favourite food there is “cecina”!
