Letter to the Editor
December 5, 2017
Open letter to the Editor in Chief of
“El Ciento-Siete” Magazine
Dear Paola,
I would like to start by saying CONGRATULATIONS, for the publish-
ing of the first issue of the “El Ciento-Siete”. I wish you the best in
this new beginning and I look forward to the next number already.
I have to say that reading what you guys published astonished me;
especially some of the bold statements made by the opinion writ-
ers. I’m happy to see that young adults are still willing to speak
their minds and not being passive in such a fast
changing world. I think that some people might find your state-
ments impolite, but I found them brilliant. I believe that self-criti-
cism as well as the ability to laugh at ones actions are vital for
personal growth and are helpful to keep us out of our comfort
zone.
I would like to refer specifically to Alejandro Martinez’ article “A
Mexican in an American School” in which he speaks about being
Mexican and not knowing too much about his own country, and
how this may affect their leadership positions in the future. As
Alejandro says, we are entitled to be aware of both our global and
local environment as well. Last year I read a book called “El Mirrey-
nato” which talks about how many high profile politicians, who
studied in prestigious schools, are completely out of touch with
Mexico’s social and economical realities and how this results in
social inequity problems, not to mention the gigantic amount of
corruption at all levels of government. I hope more people start
considering what Alejandro is concerned about. Please count with
me for any activity involving getting to know more about Mexico.
Thank you Alejandro, and thank you “El Ciento-Siete” for being a
magazine that makes respectful, intelligent and very specific criti-
cism about the problems of our community, the people your age
and the things that need urgent consideration. I take my hat off to
you.
Sincerely,
Mr. Daniel Marines
