paris, selfies and capitalism
Paris! The city of love- well-known city for tourism especially staring at the Eiffel Tower it is a must for every first-timer when visit Paris. During the trip, I was visited some popular places such as Louvre, Barbès – Rochechouart, Sacré-Cœur, and other popular, touristy places. As I walking in every spot I visited, I saw many groups of people or individuals taking selfies. I was thought it might interesting to discuss about selfie culture and the selfie stick as a new form of capitalism. It is quite dominant for people who take selfies in popular spot to link this with a critique on digital narcissism.
The reason why this phenomenon grabs my attention is as you, can imagine when you walk in at some popular places or spot for tourists, it was easy to find a street seller who sell some merchandise related with that area, for example during my trip it was easy to find street seller who sell Eiffel tower miniature or anything related with Paris. Most of them also sell the selfie stick. Which lead to the question; what was happened in this era now?
What I believe is selfie culture has become new way of digital narcissism. Since the rise of selfie culture and invention of the front-facing camera, and now selfie stick! The invention may seem quite silly, a monopod that attaches to your smartphones and it can be extended so the user can fit a group or the background into the photo.
