COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
ENGLISH 9
Grade 9
1 credit Prerequisite(s): See Below
This is a full-year course in which writing, the core of the curriculum, is
taught in conjunction with literature. The literature of this course consists
of thematic units based on poetry, drama, fiction, and non-fiction.
Students are assigned individual reading.
Students deliver oral
presentations and work collaboratively. Research skills, strategies, and
MLA format are introduced. The study of vocabulary and grammar, both
formal and informal in context, is an important part of this course.
Development and application of critical thinking skills are essential parts
of the work of this course. Students are expected to be active participants
in class discussion.

Students who select this course should be self-motivated and self-directed.
There is a high expectation of student performance and rigorous work
requirements.

This course offers the same content as course 5011. It is college
preparatory and appropriate for most students entering ninth grade.

1 Credit Prerequisite(s): English 9 (5011 or 5012)
Writing as a process is further developed, as are those skills necessary for
the effective communication of ideas. In addition to student-generated
topics, writing is based on the critical reading and study of various types
of literature: short story, novel, non-fiction, drama, and poetry.
Vocabulary and grammar are studied on a regular basis. A research project
is assigned.

motivated college-bound students in which writing is the focus of
instruction. Students who select this course should be self-motivated and
self-directed. There is a high expectation of student performance and
rigorous work requirements.

This course offers the same content as course 024. It is college preparatory
and appropriate for most students in tenth grade.
