is in the form of calcium carbonate. In this study they divided the
women into three groups. The first group (A) received eggshell
calcium, the second group (B) received plain calcium carbonate
and the third group (C) was the placebo group who did not
receive calcium. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured at
the beginning and end of the study. The results diagram shows
that the women who received adequate calcium (Groups A and
B) increased their bone mineral density, but the most interesting
finding was the difference between groups A and B. After 12
months of supplementations, only BMD of the femoral neck of
the group A taking eggshell calcium was significantly increased.
This is important because it means that calcium carbonate does
not work as well as eggshell calcium when it comes to increasing
bone mineral density. Also, as shown in the early absorption
studies, this is attributed to the presence of the specialized
proteins found in the eggshell matrix that significantly improve
absorption and uptake of the calcium.
