PRO TIP
of the
MONTH
SQUARE STANCE
A square stance will help promote a more fluid body
mechanic. It allows the upper body and lower body to work
together versus against each other. This position will help
you understand your Swing Path, if your divots are going
towards the target NOT left or Right of the target then your
Swing Path matches your Alignment. Which leads to a
Straight Ball Flight (if the club face is Square)
CLOSED STANCE
A closed stance can be helpful in some cases but the
tendency we normally see is not good. What normally
happens is a player will start PULLING the ball (COMING
OVER THE TOP) which leads them to start SLICING the
ball. This is caused from the body aiming towards the target
which means you have to swing across your body to start
the ball on the intended TARGET LINE. This then leads
to weight shift to the trail foot instead of the lead foot at
impact.
OPEN STANCE
The open stance is used for certain situations such as
chipping or trying to hit a FADE. There are some negative
effects if a player is setting up like this for EVERY shot,
this position tends to lead to a player not releasing the club
head which leads to loss of power and SLOWER swing
speeds. This is caused by tension in the WHOLE body
working to keep the club face online with the target.
There are MANY of positive and negative things from
CLOSED and OPEN stances, the situation of the shot at
hand will determine when to use these Two Stances. For
more information on these positions, feel free to stop by
the Pro Shop and ask any questions you have.
