Foxwoods and Sportingbet
CONSEQUENCES OF A DEAL
Sportingbet left the US market in 2006 after the enactment of UIGEA, reaching a settlement with the DoJ in September last year. Its re-entry may convince others that have previously reached similar deals that now is the time to make their move. The JV appears to be focused on a free-play poker site. However while the likes of South Point have opted to set up a poker room with the freeplay Zen Entertainment network, Sportingbet’s real-money expertise could put Foxwoods at an advantage in the long run. Talks with Ladbrokes over a potential takeover broke down in October, but now Sportingbet has agreed the sale of its Turkish business it is better placed to focus its efforts across the Atlantic. Foxwoods is believed to be retaining all branding on all products and games launched. This sidesteps issues of brand recognition which might be brought about by Sportingbet’s lengthy US absence. While Sportingbet moved its Paradise Poker product away from its proprietary software in 2007, its role within the joint venture will be advisory rather than provision-based. The operator will advise Foxwoods on which software to take on, and then oversee marketing.
On 7 October, eGaming Review broke the news that Sportingbet had signed a letter of intent to edge it closer to a joint venture with Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut. The London-listed operator is believed to have fought off challenges from GTECH G2 and Betsson to reach a deal with the venue.
