When looking back at
the last two years, we
saw a rapid schedule for
approving the Spanish
online gaming framework
followed by a long and
somewhat turbulent
process ending with the
granting of licences to
55 operators. It seems,
therefore, 2013 could
be the year of de?nitive
consolidation for the
sector in Spain.
The most recent ?gures
released by the Spanish
regulator, La Dirección
General de Ordenación
del Juego (DGOJ),
show continued growth
(€61.4m of GGR) in the
fourth quarter of 2012.
However everyone seems
to agree there is not
enough market share to
go round for the current
53 existing operators. As
a result, during this year
we will surely witness
new withdrawals from
the market and operators
handing back their licences.
All in all, 2013 is set
to be far from smooth,
as there are a few key
issues for which operators
are awaiting a de?nitive
outcome from the
regulator. These include
the draft amendments
on bingo and betting
regulations, as well as
the pending regulation
for advertising online
games. However, the
most important matter
is the result of the open
