in speci?c areas, but it’s hard to say where these will be at this stage. eGR: Betfair has always focused heavily on developing proprietary technology, but still works with the likes of Playtech and OpenBet for casino and ?xed-odds sportsbook. Are you aiming to bring all your product development in-house, or will third-party suppliers remain necessary? TM: Third-party suppliers will always remain necessary. The key reason for this is that if something provides a competitive advantage, like our exchange does, I like to own the IP and do it in-house. But if it is a commodity based product, such as poker, and I can’t add anything new to it, then there is always a case for using suppliers. The only reason this might change is if I can get to market quicker by integrating a product in-house. eGR: How much work have Betfair put into developing cloud-based systems? Do you feel operators will eventually be forced to invest in the cloud? TM: We have an initiative working on cloud, which as a system we do think can bring bene?ts, certainly from an internal aspect. Clouds can give developers access to systems across the globe, and make sharing these more efficient than data servers. The challenge is ?nding ways to use it for production systems. Certain areas, such as where we can store customer data, are often regulated for example. Fundamentally, Cloud is an interesting area, and we are working out where it can assist us.
