In Italy, the nation’s gambling win equates to 1.4% of GDP as opposed to just 0.6% in France. As a more northern European nation you would expect a higher online penetration, though it is worth demonstrating neither scheme is close to the pan EU average for interactive gambling which is now 11.5% of total activity. Across all product verticals (horse and sports betting and poker) France generated additional tax revenues. However, all the signs are that the position will be reversed going forward for the following reasons. The current tax rates are unsustainable for operators in France. To date, H2 has calculated that only c€37m (c€30m annualised) has been made in contribution (gross win less taxes/levies/marketing) by operators over the ?rst ?ve quarters of the scheme. This equates to just 5% of gross win whereas taxation/ levies have accounted for 48%. Each quarter the percentage of gross win
allocated to marketing has fallen but it is expected that as a result gross win will be impacted over time. In Q3 last year only horserace betting was ahead of its Q3 2010 level. In Italy, new products (ring game poker and casino table games) and the expansion in the sports betting available will lead to a greater expansion in the scale of the Italian market and a much higher proportion of Italian player interactive activity being captured by the onshore scheme.
