EDITOR'S LETTER Things are getting serious now, or should I say at long last. Senator Raymond Lesniak, who has been pushing for regulatory change in New Jersey, tells me he expects the Senate and Assembly to pass his sponsored bill in the coming weeks, the state Governor Chris Christie to sign it immediately afterwards and, following an “aggressive timetable”, the ?rst real-money game to be operated by one of its 12 land-based casinos in September. This comes from the man who sponsored the repeal of the death penalty making New Jersey the ?rst state to abolish it in more than 30 years. I for one am betting he can get it done ?rst. A close second is Nevada. At the time of writing, Gaming Control Board chairman Mark Lipparelli (see Q&A on p9) has received 21 individual licence applications from local operators and several large European software suppliers with Playtech’s paperwork in the post, CEO Mor Weizer tells me. The bill is poker-only, but some of the largest names in the business are lining up to license and operate there potentially one day giving them access to the rest of the country, as and when it regulates. Third in the race is California where Senators Rod Wright and Darrell Steinberg have jointly introduced Senate Bill 1463 where “eligible entities” would be entitled to apply for 10-year licences. The bill only applies to poker for the ?rst two years following its proposed implementation, although after this comes to an end the department has said it may phase in other games. However, getting every interested party, including over a 100 Native American tribes, to agree to terms will be the major stumbling block.
