ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

HAL AND SUE ROSE

HAL AND SUE ROSE have a deep love for Eastern Florida State College , rooted in personal experience and success . The relationship began in the early 1970s and led to successful careers and steadfast , continued support of the college .
Hal , the mayor of West Melbourne and a retired educator , attended then BCC on a tennis scholarship .
“ I think the scholarship was a whopping $ 125 , but it paid for my classes ,” said Rose . “ Though I don ’ t remember our team being particularly good , we had a great time and really enjoyed representing the college .”
What was most important to him in those days was that the college felt local , small and not overwhelming . His instructors were extremely kind and supportive . Plus , it was close to home , allowing him to go classes .
“ I drove this old VW Bug ,” added Rose . “ One day I was running late and paved parking at the college was a premium . There was so little of it . So I parked on the grass . When I got out of class and headed to my car , I found it in the ditch .”
Hal went on to become an educator and worked in middle schools throughout Brevard County . He taught many classes about career planning . For him , this is one area in which EFSC is an asset to the community .
“ EFSC provides educational opportunities for all kinds of students , whether they want to earn a four-year degree or a workforce certificate that gets them right to work .”
