Bruce Haupt – His road to
Harvard began at BCC
T
he journey taken by Bruce Haupt is extraordinary and unexpected. Bruce moved to Merritt
Island when he was 8 years old. As a student at Merritt Island High School, he was lost and
adrift. He dropped out of high school in 10th grade and started working at entry level retail
jobs. While working at Circuit City, and seeing many of his younger co-workers graduating high
school and then going off to college, he decided to give school another try. First by getting his
GED, and then applying to Brevard Community College. Bruce was supported and encouraged
by several faculty and staff at BCC. He named Dr. Wayne Stein, one of his first professors, now
provost of our Palm Bay campus, Renee Roth in advising, Cathy Beam, Dr. Amy Hendricks and
Dr. Mike Kaliszeski as some of the people at BCC who were here to help him to become engaged
and involved at the college. Bruce was a member and then President of Phi Beta Kappa and was
nominated to be the commencement speaker at his graduation.
Bruce was then accepted to the University of Florida, where he received his BA, Political Science.
As an aside, while at UF, Bruce applied and received the Harry S. Truman Scholarship. Because
there is a consideration for students coming from community colleges, he feels his time at BCC
directly helped his being awarded this scholarship.

Following UF, Bruce was accepted to Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government where he received his Master’s in Public Policy,
Business & Government Policy.
Bruce worked several years for the City of Houston, starting as the finance director and finishing his time there as Deputy Assistant Director.
Leaving this secure job was a leap of faith, however, his wife was offered an opportunity to work in Chengdu, China. While there, Bruce
volunteered for a few organizations while immersing himself in the language.
Bruce’s wife was then offered a position in Oman where Bruce was able to work as a Senior Policy Advisor for the Secretariat General of the
Supreme Council for Planning. He is currently working as a Senior Consultant for the World Bank Group as well as being a stay-at-home dad for
his two young daughters.
In Bruce’s free time, he is earning his Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky and is in his dissertation phase.
The journey this man has taken was realized by taking his first step to Brevard Community College where he was mentored and encouraged to
become engaged and reach for more. Bruce would like to remain engaged with EFSC.
