Roger K. Henry Memorial Scholarship for
Service Learning will be awarded for the
first time this fall!

t is better to give than to receive. That important lesson is among
the guiding principles of EFSC’s Center for Service-Learning and Civic
Engagement, which allows students to volunteer in the community
and receive college credit for their work. It was also the passion of the
late Roger K. Henry, the former developer and director of the Service-
Learning program at EFSC, which held its 30th anniversary this year.
Some 2,500 students participated during the 2017-18 academic year,
contributing more than 172,000 hours of volunteer work.
With the passing of Henry in 2016, his wife, Sally Stephen, and friends
have contributed the initial funds to create the Roger K. Henry Memorial
Scholarship to benefit students involved in the Service- Learning Program.
The $1,000 scholarship will be awarded for the first time this Fall 2018
Semester. Students must be registered with Service-Learning and have
at least 125 reported service hours to qualify for the scholarship. In
addition, they must have a 3.0 GPA, be enrolled six hours or more, and
write an essay about why community service is important to them.
Many of you may have known Henry and remember his passion for the
program. Help keep his memory and dream alive. Please consider a gift

THE MODERN DATABASE
oogle defines cloud computing as “the practice of using a network of remote servers

hosted on the Internet to store, manage, and process data, rather than a local server or a
personal computer.” The technical jargon can be confusing but instead of logging onto a
computer in an office building downtown, you can log into a mobile device or laptop from
anywhere.
The EFSC Foundation recently upgraded its database with Raiser’s Edge NXT, which is cloud
computing at its best. NXT will allow our staff to be more productive by giving them access to
the database to inform Foundation donors about the newest fundraising goal hourly or daily.
Sounds like an oxymoron, a modern database, but that is today’s reality. The workforce does
not have to be in an office to conduct business; they can be at home, in a coffee shop, or on
the beach. Modern data lives on the Internet, which is all possible with cloud computing.
