N O V E M B E R - 2 01 7 Enhanced Faculty Development Strong Community Outreach The Center for Teaching Excellence offered several new programs for faculty to provide them more opportunities to strengthen their skills in the classroom. (Employee Relations) Continued expanding the college’s community outreach through participation on several levels that further wove EFSC into the fabric of life in Brevard County. (Public Relations, Community Awareness) Faculty Highlights: • Hosted 22 workshops for faculty development, including ways to better help minority students and improve student responsibility and self- motivation. • Debuted a new Canvas Superheroes initiative with 19 “go-to” faculty members who can help other faculty improve their online classes. • Named Sharon Cronk-Raby, a writing instructor on the Melbourne Campus, as Distinguished Educator of the Year for her work helping students. • Spent more than $62,000 for faculty development, with faculty attending conferences on biology, math, English, nursing and other disciplines. • Established a Faculty Bookshelf on each campus to display faculty awards and publications. Outreach Highlights: • Expanded the college’s “Health Smiles” dental clinic to year-round, providing free dental cleanings and exams to low-income children ages 3-17 who did not have access to health insurance. • More than 1,000 children were served through the program with clinic work done on the Cocoa campus. • Also partnered with Brevard Public Schools to hold a clinic at Endeavor Elementary School. • The college’s Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting students participated in the program. • The program is funded by Guy and Delores Spearman to ensure that low-income and uninsured Brevard children have access to dental health care. • Some 75 students, faculty and staff participated in the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk that featured teams from organizations and businesses around Brevard County. • Hosted Florida Today’s Volunteer Recognition Awards that drew 300 community leaders to the Simpkins Center on the Cocoa Campus to honor Brevard volunteers.
