POETRY 84 SOJOURNING WITHIN DAYDREAMS     SMITA SRIWASTAV                                    Often her fertile imagination of nimble feet meanders alone in abstract alleys of daydream, spun of gossamer threads gleaned from fireflies’ fluorescence, starlight captured from the sequined constellations, and graffiti tapestried on the diaphanous wings of butterflies. she loiters in realms of fantasy, admiring skies tinted in rainbow acrylics, sipping moonlight tasting like champagne on the tongue, weaving veils of redolence with sighs of orchids, lilacs and frangipani, and painting twilights on the austere cheeks of once grey road. here the rain sings threnodies and the sunshine like treacle tastes sweet on the tongue of honeyed desire, lavenders like purple laughter fringe the cobblestone trails in mauve, and butterflies gossip with marigolds about the nightingale’s love for rose, xanthous moths waltz crooning symphonies learnt from the skylark and lotuses hide pearls as oysters within their pollen-kissed wombs of gold. the day slowly unwinds in fleeting moments but my imagination strolls in mystique, unaware of the passage of racing seconds, of the incessant drool of the hourglass as frosted sighs of winter on glass panes are erased by fingers of mellowed sunshine, the opalescent daydreams are wiped away by the lingering sense of duty that gnaws on the consciousness and the mind discerns the need to do one’s work... Smita Sriwastav is an MBBS doctor with a passion for poetry and literature. A feeling of inner tranquillity and bliss captures her soul whenever she pens her verse.
