it requires training By Trevin Wisaksana A s the wind tugged at our clothes and gently chilled our skin, the IB Year 1 students along with several A-Level students boldly treaded their way towards the beautiful village of Widecombe In the Moor in Dartmoor. My friends and I were heading there in training for the Duke of Edinburgh expedition next academic year. Our aim was to strengthen our endurance, learn how to use a compass and a map along with familiarizing ourselves with the environment. Nine of us, guided by our teachers and supervisor, climbed our way up the hills of Haytor, and were stopped by several gigantic rock structures. From the peak of these, all of us could see the endless curved horizon formed by the hills of the countryside of South West England and we could begin to visualize this terrain. using taxis to get to Dartmoor. It took us around thirty to forty minutes from our campus. My friends and I arrived at a local parking lot which was directly facing a hill which gave us a full view of the Haytor Rocks. These rocks were two massive prehistoric rocks that stood strong on the top of the hill. The team then started to walk their way towards it and the four hour journey began. With determination, my friends and I raced our way to the peak and we soon felt the hardship of climbing the hill. It wasn’t draining all of our energy, but we just simply imagined what it would be like when we have to carry heavier backpacks for the real expedition, it’ll be tougher. As we went down the hill, the teachers led us to an abandoned mining site and it looked like a massive sink hole. It was stunning as I have never seen an EF Torbay students started this journey abandoned mining site before in my life. It Requires Training || 2 Back Underground 2
