Message from the Permanent Secretary
Education in the 21st century is multidimensional with increasing complexities and threats that are systemic and environmental. The challenges presented to contemporary learner and instructor in the wake of a global pandemic, have resulted in the exploration of more creative and diverse approaches to learning and development. The use of technology has increased exponentially and virtual learning and instruction has been predominantly employed to mitigate potential learning loss that is the natural consequence of limited face-to-face engagement. The experience of St. Vincent and the Grenadines in this pandemic environment has been compounded by resource limitations, natural disasters and the need to navigate unfamiliar terrains.
The contents of this edition of St. Vincent and the Grenadines Educational Statistical Digest should not be interpreted as mere quantitative outputs but interpreted and examined as a story of resilience and resurgence. Inside every figure, word, graph or chart is a tale of triumph of our Education system through the exploits of government, administrators, principals, teachers, students and other stakeholders. The collective contributions of consenting and dissenting voices found expression in the creative responses aimed at mitigating the negative impacts of multiple threats on our Education system. The review period in the Educational Statistical Digest proved to one of exploration and discovery as gaps were identified, creative solutions discovered and resources increased.
Data needs intensified and the demand for different types of information from the policy directorate typified this period of unprecedented challenges. The recognition of data gaps propelled the Education Planning Unit to revise multiple research instruments in an effort to expand the data captured. Empirical evidence suggests that there is a strong correlation between reliable data and sound decision making. The Education Planning Unit within the Ministry of Education and National Reconciliation continues to provide comprehensive information to inspire policy amendments and developments that will improve the quality and benefits of the education product.
