Survey shows high levels of trust for teachers in Aussie schools .

Confidence and trust in teachers continues to grow as a new survey found that 72 per cent of people trusted that teachers ’ work was in the best interests of students .

It has been revealed that young people around the world are struggling at a staggering rate , after a new UNICEF report found that 1 in 5 aged 15-24 feel depressed .

And importantly for teachers , 41.6 per cent of respondents said their perceptions of teachers ’ work had improved as a direct result of COVID-19 .

To coincide with World Teachers Day , Monash University released its annual education report — ‘ Perceptions of Australian schooling : What matters in 2021 ’.
The report found that 76 per cent of respondents agreed that teachers in Australia cared for the wellbeing of their students , while 74 per cent of the public valued their past teachers and said that they had a positive impact on their lives .
“ The findings from the study reflect a high level of public trust for Australian teachers and an awareness that teachers care for the wellbeing of their students ,” said study lead Dr Amanda Heffernan , senior lecturer in Monash University ’ s Faculty of Education .
“ It ’ s also clear that teachers continue to play an influential role in developing the social and emotional skills of students , and this aspect of a teacher ’ s role should continue to shape the discussions around the teaching profession more broadly ,” she said . ■

The survey found that 19 per cent of 15- to 24-year-olds in 21 countries selfreported that they often feel depressed or “ have little interest in doing things ”.
While these rates do not measure instances of diagnosed depression , it is estimated that globally more than 1 in 7 adolescents aged 10 – 19 live with a diagnosed mental disorder .
That figure works out at 86 million adolescents aged 15 – 19 and 80 million adolescents aged 10 – 14 with a diagnosed mental disorder .
An estimated 45,800 adolescents die from suicide each year , or more than 1 person every 11 minutes .
In the report , UNICEF demands “ urgent investment in child and adolescent mental health across sectors , not just in health ” and calls on all of society to break the silence that surrounds mental health by addressing the stigma associated with it .
“ When we ignore the mental health of children , we undercut their capacity to learn , work , build meaningful relationships and contribute to the world ,” UNICEF executive director Henrietta Fore said . ■
