Top marks

School teachers rank highly in survey of most trusted professions .

A new ranking of Australians ’ perceptions of the professions has seen 74 per cent of respondents rate school teachers as ‘ high ’ or ‘ very high ’ for their ethics and honesty .

The result , published in the Roy Morgan Image of Professions Survey 2021 , saw teachers place at number four in the overall rankings , behind nurses ( 88 per cent ) at number one and doctors ( 82 per cent ) in third place , preventing a healthcare cleansweep of the top five ( dentists came in below teachers in fifth place at 71 per cent ).
School teachers placed above university lecturers , who were ranked by 53 per cent of participants as ‘ high ’ or ‘ very high ’ for ethics and honesty . This continues a trend that has occurred in every edition of the survey since its inception in 1976 .
The 21 per cent gap between the two professions is the widest ever , beating the previous record gap of 18 per cent in 1996 .
The 74 per cent ranking for school teachers is down 7 per cent on the same metric in 2017 , and for university lecturers the 53 per cent result is down a substantial 13 per cent on 2017 results . This reflects a downward trend seen across nearly all the professional categories . ( Only one group , union leaders , saw a rise in approval in the 2021 survey .)
The Roy Morgan online survey was conducted from April 13 to 22 this year and included 1,267 Australian men and women aged 14 and over . ■
