CONSERVATION SCIENCE Come Grow With Us! In the 1980s, community leaders and residents banded together with a common goal: to build a world-class zoological park in Brevard County. They envisioned a place where the community could connect with animals and nature through meaningful learning experiences that inspire positive action. And they did just that. The first part of the Zoo completed was Paws On—reaffirming local support for offering unique learning experiences to children. Since our doors opened in 1994, our community vision continued to grow and thrive, and our commitment to education has never wavered. Experiential learning is the foundation of all of our education programming. This type of education focuses on allowing students to develop knowledge and skills from direct experiences outside of a traditional learning environment. Beginning with a one-room classroom located in the Zoo’s gift shop, our education department has both literally and figuratively expanded over the years. The one-room classroom quickly became three immersive, themed classrooms. Several non-traditional classrooms, outdoor venues and learning spaces have been added since then.
