As educators who are committed to schools and communities that honour diversity , equity , inclusion and decolonization , what is sometimes referred to as “ deid ,” along with the Faculty ’ s longstanding work focused on anti-oppressive / anti-racist transformations in the education sector and society , we have devoted this issue to reflect some of the anti-racist / anti-oppressive work being done by our faculty , students , and alumni . We know that in order to create
Jerome Cranston an environment where every learner feels welcome and is able to participate fully involves them understanding and in some cases revealing who they are . Teachers , school leaders , and school trustees play important roles in creating environments that are safe for students and focused on fairness and justice . In this issue of Education News , Indigenous and racialized students offer up their ideas for consideration about what facilitates being seen and heard in the classroom and beyond , and how teachers are the change makers .
Read about grad student and teacher Keilyn Howie ’ s work toward transforming schools and society in her teaching and studies . Award-winning alumna and teacher Kiah Holness envisions environments of empowerment in education . Student Nahanni Rose tells her story about why she decided to become a teacher and the importance of being a role model . Alumnus Christian Mbanza is positively influencing change in students ' lives with his passion for history , especially Black history . Learn about the educational video series produced and directed by Le Bac student Wahbi Zarry in which he documents his efforts to learn Indigenous languages to support Indigenous peoples in their reclamation of Indigenous languages . And 3rd-year student Natasha Halliwell discusses her picture book , which is intended to make teaching hard truths of history more positive and less triggering . These stories may inspire some to become teachers themselves !
Coming out of their research on De / colonising Educational Relationships , Dr . Fatima Pirbhai-Illich and collaborator Dr . Fran Martin hosted a retreat in November 2021 as well as sessions at University of Exeter and these are now an online video series . This year our Faculty announced a new partnership with the Canadian School Boards Association to complete Phase 2 of their anti-racism strategy . Read about the work we are doing and the research team involved . As well , Dr . Christine Massing was colead in a study that will inform planning for services and supports for South Central Saskatchewan newcomers to ensure successful resettlement and integration . Language learning is highlighted as key to further education . In the final sections of the magazine , you ’ ll discover research publications and research funding and awards as we do research that matters to the community .
