A note from the Dean

Jerome Cranston
The Faculty has long been a leader in anti-oppressive education and social justice , including matters of gender and sexual diversity in its understanding of social justice . As outlined in the 2021-2026 Faculty of Education Strategic Plan , the Faculty values the " development of critical consciousness concerning the lives of marginalized colleagues , students and their families and communities ," as well as " standing in solidarity with those marginalized by race , gender , sexual orientation , religion , ability , language and other forms of systemic discrimination ."
In this issue , we hear from a diverse group of educators who are activists , teachers , researchers , and professors pursuing inclusion , celebration , and social justice for gender and sexually diverse students in education systems .
The panelists in " Talking about gender and sexual diversity " offer insights from their own experiences and situations , their sense of the current challenges in GSD work , the successes , failures and changes in the work over time , and what allyship can look like .
Researchers Niya St . Amant ' s ( Queen ’ s University ) and Dr . Alexandra Stoddart ' s ( University of Regina ) have conducted a study exploring 2SLGBTQ + student experiences of Physical Education in our Faculty . And readers learn about Kelsey Mooney ' s award-winning master ' s research into the Dove Confident Me program , in which she finds a gap in gender inclusivity that undermines the intent of the Dove program , to build self-esteem and body confidence .
We have a new Elder-in-Residence , May Desnomie , and she shares about her journey and her hopes for her work with the Faculty . We are grateful for the teachings of our former Elder-in- Residence , Alma Poitras , who retired in fall 2022 .
With our new hires , we enjoy an increasingly diverse staff and faculty . We welcome our new assistant professor in queer studies in education , j wallace skelton , and offer welcome and congratulations to another new faculty member , Dr . Jennifer MacDonald , on her successful defense . We are happy to retain Stephen Davis as a new assistant professor in le Bac and we are grateful to the RCSD for the secondment of Katherine Williams as a lecturer in le Bac programs . We are thankful for faculty who have taken on leadership roles either interim or full term and we bid farewell and best wishes to the leaders who have retired after careers living out the University ' s motto " as one who serves ."
