A note from the Dean

At a time when unmarked gravesites of former Indian Residential School students in Canada are in the process of being found through ground-penetrating radar technology , we must first acknowledge and then reflect on truth if we hope to establish respectful and mutually beneficial relationships that might lead non-Indigenous Canadians toward healing the harms we created . In acknowledging the great losses to the families and communities of students who were mandated to go to Indian residential schools and the alarming number
Jerome Cranston of children who died or experienced trauma while attending these institutions and the pervasive nature of intergenerational trauma , the Faculty of Education reinforces our individual and collective commitment to Truth and Reconciliation , to pimosayta : learning to walk together .
Included in the Autumn 2021 issue of our Faculty ’ s Education News magazine , Dr . Angelina Weenie ( First Nations University of Canada ) and Dr . Anna-Leah King ( Faculty of Education ) tell their stories about the impact of Indigenous education and the discovery of unmarked gravesites in their lives and families . In June , we announced the inaugural Gabriel Dumont Research Chair in Métis / Michif Education , the first in a Faculty of Education in Canada . Dr . Melanie Brice was appointed Chair for a 5-year term . Learn about “ the culture of place ” Melanie brings to the role and how she plans to support Métis / Michif education . Dr . Heather Phipps offers an artistic expression of her reflection on the expression “ Every Child Matters ” through her poem written in Cree and English that she wrote as part of a Cree creative writing class she is taking with Professor Solomon Ratt . The Truth and Reconciliation week activities of le Bac students and the Education Students ’ Society are also highlighted . And , upon his retirement , Dr . Nick Forsberg discusses the importance of living the story , not just telling it in “ I need to be in the quinzhee , not just talk about it .” Also in this issue , we celebrate funding and awards , new faculty and staff , and published research .
