Week 4 Case Study: EDPY 552: Ethan: Early Intervention
Interventions
JASPER Model
JASPER stands for Joint Attention Symbolic Play Engagement and Regulation. This model is a combination of
the principles of applied behavioural approach and the developmental approach. This intervention would target
Ethan’s social-communication skills by the development of joint attention and symbolic play. Joint attention is
the ability for Ethan and another person to share attention on one object. Symbolic play is Ethan’s ability to use
objects during play to represent different objects or ideas. Having joint attention and symbolic play skills will
help Ethan develop social and communication skills. This model includes an assessment of Ethan that will
establish where he is at developmentally and to help develop measurable goals. The sessions will include
discrete trials that are developed around an interest of Ethan’s. These trials will help him develop his joint
attention and play skills. As Ethan’s parent you will be trained to facilitate sessions with him and a professional
will make sure you are completing all the needed components to help develop his joint attention and play skills.
