Making beautiful items from leather is already one way
of contributing to environmentally sustainable practices.
Raw hides are in essence waste from another industry.
By recycling these raw hides, they are turned into leather.
There are many tanning techniques, of which vegetable
tanning is the most natural and environmentally sustain-
able. The vegetable tanning process entails the hides be-
ing tanned by only using natural raw materials, such as
tree bark, wood, and leaves. Because of the high level of
specialization of vegetable tanning, these leathers can be
relatively scarce, and therefore very expensive. They try
to manufacture as many of our products from vegetable
tanned leather as possible and definitely plan to use veg
tanned leather in more of our products in the future. They
also separate all rubbish from the workshop in different
bins, in order to enable easy recycling.
The second important sustainability factor that is key at
Eden & Co., is sustainability in terms of designs. They do
not want to manufacture products that are typical of a
certain period or bound to a certain temporal context.
They want to create products that are beautiful, now, but
also in 20, 30 or 40 years from now. By combining these
timeless, elegant designs with the high-quality materials
and the craftsmanship they offer, they are able to provide
leather products that are truly an investment and worth
the money that customers pay.
