W H AT M A D E YO U CHOOSE THE C O LO U R S ? Maxwell: We work well together. For this collection, we could have made his collection and my collection, but that’s not how it happened. We ap- preciate each other so much. There are pieces here the collection where I sketched and when we put the collection together he’d choose the piece I would have left out. Now that’s one of my favourite pieces. Maxwell: The collection is called ‘Umakoti’ which is a bride. Basically, we took elements of what an African bride would wea r on her wedding day. We ended up building an armour for umakoti. You can see a lot of our shapes protect her and the tassels reflect the covering of ‘itlali’, a blanket worn traditionally by brides out of respect for their in-laws. Maxwell: The colours are not bright. We just decided on colours from el- ements of bridal attire while trying to make the pieces contemporary and wearable. We want clients to be able to wear this on a day to day basis. Looking at their collection, ‘Umakoti’, the themes are clear. It is edgy in the way it blends textures, shapes and cultures while remaining deeply respectful of the culture surrounding the wedding day. The shape of the designs shows the armour and respectful covering that a bride puts on for her in-laws, while the easy flow of the fabrics creates enticing lines that appeal to the groom and lure him in. Mmuso and Maxwell about the sultry makoti seducing her groom with her newly acquired Mmusomaxwell attire. And then we got back to the interview. We don’t post our bad days and struggles, but when we win, we’ll post that. Now people think that successes are the only ele- ments that happen. They don’t see how hard we have worked. I would tell youngsters that they just have to keep pushing. EDITÉUR PLUS / THE SIXTEENTH ISSUE
