THUNDER CLAIM NATIONAL TITLE: THUNDER CLAIM NATIONAL TITLE: PANTHERS REPEAT IN THE NHL, A NATIONAL SPORTS FEATURE

BY ELIJAH POWELL
The summer of 2025 delivered major moments across sports even without the Olympics. Three postseasons stood out: the NBA, NHL, and FIFA Club World Cup.
The Oklahoma City Thunder captured their first NBA championship, defeating the Indiana Pacers in a decisive Game 7. Pacers point guard Tyrese Haliburton tore his Achilles in the loss and will miss next season. Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander earned both league MVP and Finals MVP honors. That same day, Kevin Durant was traded from the Phoenix Suns to the Houston Rockets in a seven-team deal. Making it the first deal of its kind in NBA History.
Other big moves included Deandre Ayton joining the Los Angeles Lakers and Bradley Beal heading to the Clippers. The Dallas Mavericks drafted Cooper Flagg first overall, a highly touted prospect since high school.
In the NHL, the Florida Panthers repeated as Stanley Cup champions, defeating the Edmonton Oilers in six games. They became the first back-to-back winners since the Tampa Bay Lightning. Washington Capitals forward T. J. Oshie announced his retirement after nine seasons.
Soccer also saw history with the expanded FIFA Club World Cup. The 2025 tournament featured 32 clubs in a World Cup-style format, with group stages and knockout rounds. Stars like Lamine Yamal, Jude Bellingham, and Jamal Musiala impressed but fell short of the title. Chelsea claimed the championship, beating Paris Saint- Germain 3 – 0 in the New Jersey final. The stakes were high, with $ 1 billion in prize money on the line.
From the Thunder’ s breakthrough to the Panthers’ repeat and Chelsea’ s global triumph, the summer of 2025 was one for the record books— and set the stage for an exciting fall in sports.
