On Aug. 28, ESPN brought its award-winning show First Take to Norfolk State University( NSU), uniting the campus community. The visit followed national attention after NSU hired former NFL quarterback Michael Vick as head football coach. ESPN used the opportunity to showcase the essence of HBCUs on a national stage.
First Take launched its 2025 HBCU tour at NSU after previously visiting Winston-Salem State and Howard last fall. Students and alumni crowded the campus ahead of the live broadcast inside Joseph G. Echols Memorial Hall, eager to see Molly Qerim, former NFL MVP Cam Newton, and Stephen A. Smith. The audience brought energy and flare to the show’ s backdrop.

Many students described memorable experiences, ranging from joining the audience to appearing on camera and even standing on the floor during the taping. On Aug. 27, Norfolk State’ s Joint Greek Council President, Nyla Clayton, represented the campus community on First Take as she was chosen to film a promotion that would air in the live show. She highlighted the strength, unity, and culture of NSU’ s Greek organizations.
“ The moment was described as one of the most fulfilling highlights of my HBCU college experience, marking a milestone not only for the council but also for the broader Spartan community,” Clayton said.
The appearance came ahead of Norfolk State’ s season-opening football game against Towson at William“ Dick” Price Stadium. With the anticipation of Michael Vick’ s head coaching debut, ESPN took the chance to connect with students and staff while covering the team’ s opener. After a disappointing previous season, fans expressed hope for success under new leadership.
