Sharing Online Music Practice Kenneth Dempster , School of Arts & Creative Industries , Associate Fellow
Teaching music performance modules online presents the challenge of creating a series of classes that enable students to develop their practical training . I achieved this through the research and discussion of YouTube videos , covering all aspects of musical rehearsal and performance , including : warm-up techniques , practice strategies , on-stage etiquette , etc . This helps to prepare students for their practical performance assessments presented either ‘ live ’ on-campus or recorded on their own devices .
The videos I present are recordings produced by a variety of professional music teachers and celebrated musicians from across the world . Each video forms the basis for group study and discussion , and encourages the students to explore additional videos specific to their own instrument and repertoire .
I developed an online space for a Music Performance Class , normally held in a face-to-face campus workshop environment . At home , the students rehearse and record themselves with an online piano accompaniment , then upload to the Panopto video space so that both students and class-tutor can listen to the performance and offer feedback advice .

I ’ ve enjoyed how this class seems quite close with normality , given the challenges we are facing right now . The module has been developed well to be online , and to still give a valuable learning experience and help students in the best way possible .
I enjoyed the content provided , which we have discussed in class , and I learned more about how to analyse a performance by watching the YouTube videos .
The comments provided from my peers can be reflected in my own performance .
