Strong returning group energizes aquatics

After winning the State Class AA Girls Swimming and Diving Meet last season , the Edina girls have the speed and experience to contend for another title .
The first week of practice at Art Downey Aquatic Center was spirited and work-oriented as swimmers put in the mileage and divers worked on refining technique .
Edina ’ s four captains are Reagan Greeley , Zara Karimi , Ingrid Mrachek and Anja Nymo . Karimi is a state meet returnee in diving and Nymo is a returning state meet swimmer .
The captains realize that
being a championship team is a big responsibility , and they want to make sure that athletes new to the team this year get a good start .
“ I tell the new girls that hard work pays off ,” Mrachek said . “ It is fun being able to lead the team . Everyone is working together .”
Karimi is one of five divers on the Hornet roster . Although the divers work independently from the swimmers , there is a bond between both elements of the squad . Divers train individually over the summer before coming together with Edina diving coach

Edina ’ s Libbi McCarthy , one of the top returning swimmers in the state , won the 50-yard freestyle title last season and placed second in the See Swim , Page 11 100 freestyle .
