Back to my roots – Meeting The President of India
I was outside a huge palace of unimaginable grandeur. All the dithering about what
to wear and what to say were no longer valid. Here I was. I thanked myself for
sticking to my gut instincts and not taking the advice of well-wishers. The blue
school blazer, though out of place in the sweltering heat of mid-morning Delhi, the
capital of India, was strangely reassuring. An Indian outfit would have made me
squirm even if it had made me a few degrees cooler.
From where I stood I could see the high, imposing iron gate and the long, sandy
coloured driveway. In the distance I could spy my destination, a place where one
can only visit if formally invited by the President of India himself. A lot of
emotions were swirling within me – proud and happy to get this rare opportunity
mixed with nervousness. Moreover, the climatic conditions didn‛t do me any
favours. Arriving from the cooler climes of Scotland to a heat wave would make
even the most seasoned traveller keel over.
