For the more sports-car oriented buyer the i Project has also been developing its answer to the Tesla Model S. The i8 is set to debut later this year at the Frankfurt Motor Show and could be on the road as soon as next year. This hybrid carries a mid-mounted 220bhp 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, which delivers 300Nm of torque to the rear axle and up the front a 129bhp electric motor delivers 250Nm of torque. With that kind of power behind this futuristic-looking vehicle it is expected that the car will go from zero to 100 km/h in a rapid 4.6 seconds. That impressive performance may have you thinking that this vehicle doesn’t have much to write home about in terms of range but BMW has managed to combine performance with efficiency to produce a car that can travel 44 kilometres per litre. Completing the i8’s sports-car appeal are its doors which swing up in Lamborghini-type fashion. But unlike that Italian gas guzzler this car won’t leave your wallet feeling significantly lighter at the pump.
