the improvements, he was cheated as Edison claimed that he was joking. Tesla, upon hearing an offer of a $10 raise to his weekly wages, promptly quit. Though the rivalry between Edison and Tesla is well-documented, what most people are unaware of is the actual scale of how much Tesla contributed to electrical engineering as well as convenience to people’s daily lives. ELECTRIC POWER: Upon discovering the rotating magnetic field produced by two or more alternating currents out asynchronous with each other, Tesla developed prototypes of AC motors and the polyphase system for the generation, transmission and distribution of electric currents. This concept was adapted to be used in hydroelectric dams, and in 1895 the first great hydroelectric dam was completed and began operating despite warnings from Edison and Kelvin. The polyphase system principle of converting mechanical movement into electrical energy was crossed over to a variety of systems over the years, including wind and steam turbines. RADIO: Tesla experimented with radio waves around 1896 in his Gerlach Hotel home in New York. It was through these experiments that the foundations for radio control were established, and in 1898 Tesla was able to publically demonstrate a radiocontrolled boat in Madison Square garden. The oblivious crowd jumped at wild conclusions as to how it was possible, and the fevered claims ranged from pure magic to telepathy, to the boat being controlled by a hidden monkey inside. WIRELESS: In 1899 Tesla relocated to Colorado Springs where some of his more daring experiments took place. These experiments included investigations of atmospheric electricity. Observing lightning was not common practice at the turn of the century, and the kind of materials and complexity required to get adequate readings was beyond then-current technology. It was through these findings as well as observing wave interactions with the earth’s surface that led to the advent of the first wireless transceivers which in turn made standing waves. It should be noted however, that some of the dramatized depictions of Tesla’s wireless technology (a particularly prestigious movie comes to Z[?
