They are three times more likely to report having a higher quality of life, six times more likely to be engaged at work, they are more productive and less likely to quit their jobs. The old deficit-based model of attempting to find out what is wrong with people and then laboring over changing those things has been proven to not work well. The research is very clear that when we discover what’s best in our students, teachers and leaders and then nurture those things, exceedingly more positive results occur. Yes, working on weaknesses is important, but working on weaknesses is not the path to excellence. the training, establish common language and calibrate systems to develop sound instructional leaders who can identify effective research-based instruction, provide meaningful evidenced-based feedback, provide targeted assistance and conduct risk-free well received coaching conversations. Paul Porter, a former elementary and secondary school principal, SELPA director, school superintendent for 17 years, and Gallup Certified Strengths Coach, has been using Strengths with Leaders with teachers and graduate students to help transform schools throughout California. He recently provided an extensive series of workshops for a group of superintendents using strengths in their leadership practices and schools. Their teachers have since been working to develop strengths-based IEPs, strengths-based parent-teacher conferences, and strengths-based, bucket-filling classrooms with a great degree of success. ACSA’s One-Day Workshops are a great opportunity to take a deeper dive into a single subject in order to significantly enhance the learning. For details and registra- tion on all ACSA one-day professional learning events, please visit www.acsa. org/trainings. Porter will be leading ACSA’s newest offering to assist you in learning more about your strengths. This new and exciting workshop is scheduled in two locations this Fall: ACSA Ontario, Oct. 26 and ACSA Sacramento, Dec. 7, and will afford leaders the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of strengths-based leadership.
