Nominations open online for state ACSA awards
ACSA is now accepting nominations for the 2019 Statewide Awards Program . The program encompasses the Administrator of the Year Awards as well as special awards for individuals and partnership programs .
All nominations will once again be submitted through the online nomination platform , which was successfully launched last year . This streamlined process creates a consistent experience for all participants statewide , with a single portal and submission deadline for every award category in every ACSA region .
The deadline for all nominations is Jan . 17 , 2019 . It is recommended to start soon to allow for time to collect the information needed , to write thoughtful criteria explanations and to request letters of support .
Following are a few frequently asked questions about the program .
• Who is eligible for the Administrator of the Year Awards ?
Active state ACSA membership is required for all Administrator of the Year categories at the state level . Current members of the state Board of Directors and ACSA staff are not eligible for any awards .
• How do I start a nomination ?
Create an account or login to an existing account on the ACSA Awards online platform , accessible at http :// acsa . awardsplatform . com , and click “ Start New Entry .”
Detailed instructions will walk you through the steps of starting and saving a nomination .
You can view a brief video demo of the online platform at www . acsa . org / awards under “ Help & Resources ,” in addition to finding FAQ , an overview of all award categories , and other helpful information .
• If I created an account on the platform last year , do I need to register again ?
No , your account from the 2018 program is still active , so all you need to do is login using the same credentials .
• Is there a way to find out in advance what information is required for the nomination form ?
Complete lists of everything you need to complete each award category nomination can be found at www . acsa . org / awards under the tab “ Help & Resources ” and the heading “ Starting your nomination .”

SPI Torlakson receives award from suicide prevention group
Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson has received a career recognition award from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention , while calling for increased awareness and funding for mental health and suicide prevention .
“ Suicide is reaching epidemic proportions in our nation , our state , and our schools , making it even more important to focus on suicide prevention and expanding mental health services ,” Torlakson said . “ A suicide is a terrible , preventable loss that creates a tragedy for a family , a school , and an entire community .”
Torlakson praised schools for the work underway to prevent suicide , while asking all educators and members of the school community to be on the lookout for students showing signs of risk , and to assist them in seeking treatment .
“ This is no time for silence . If you notice someone suffering or in need , please speak out and help point them toward assistance ,” he said .
Torlakson received the “ Allies in Action ” award from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention for his long public service career of supporting suicide prevention , including his leadership on student mental health issues in California .
Suicide rates increased significantly in nearly every U . S . state from 1999 through 2016 , the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently announced . Youth suicide is the second-leading cause of death for adolescents and young adults between the ages of 15 to 24 .
Torlakson thanked the California Department of Education Student Mental Health Policy Work Group , a panel of expert volunteers , for its work . The group assesses the mental health needs of students and gather evidence to support policy recommendations to Torlakson and the Legislature . Information is available at the CDE Student Mental Health Policy Work Group website at http :// bit . ly / 2LNRMaA .
The work group helped develop and promote a model suicide prevention policy . These policies became mandatory at California ’ s public schools for grades 7 through grade 12 , beginning with the 2017 – 18 school year .
