Summer Residential Programs at
UCLA begin June 23
ACSA’s summer programs provide
opportunities for principals and aspiring
principals to meet in a stimulating and
supportive setting to examine crucial
school reform topics applicable to their
work. Each program is designed to provoke
and ultimately foster a lifelong commit-
ment to the calling of teaching. The pro-
grams offer practitioners invaluable days of
study reflection and discourse with experts
and school leaders. Formal and informal
learning activities focus on the challenges
confronting today’s school leaders. There
are two sessions: Principals’ Summer
Institute (designed for current principals)
from June 23-29, and Institute for New
& Aspiring Principals from June 24-28.
Registration includes housing and meals.

NASS conference will feature former
U.S. Education Secretary Paige
The National Association of School
Superintendents invites education lead-
ers from across the nation to join policy
experts as they ignite change during three
days of advocacy centered on education-
al equity in the nation’s capital. This is a
unique opportunity for leaders to come
together to network, engage, hear from
experts on legislative issues and media, and
to level up advocacy skills. The conference
will feature a keynote address by Rod
Paige, former U.S. Secretary of Education
and the first African American to serve
in the role. The IgnitED conference is
Sept. 15-19, 2019 in Washington, D.C.
Registration is $325 for NASS/ACSA
members and $650 for non-members. For
more information or to register, visit www.

Grassroots advocacy:
Sen. Connie Leyva
On April 26, ACSA hosted an education roundtable with Sen. Connie
Leyva, D-Chino, and members from her senate district in Ontario. Pictured
from left, ACSA Governmental Relations Advocate Martha Alvarez,
San Bernardino County Office of Education Program Manager for LCAP
Christine Gianunzio, Leyva, San Bernardino County Superintendent of
Schools Ted Alejandre, and ACSA Governmental Relations Advocate Iván
Carrillo. During the roundtable, school administrators shared perspectives
on pertinent issues impacting education. Alejandre (also pictured at left)
presented an overview of education challenges students face, including
the need for mental health supports. The event was an example of grass-
roots advocacy and a continuation of the work that began during ACSA’s
2019 Legislative Action Day at the state Capitol.
