have always resisted putting limitations on
myself professionally and personally.”
In her travels while filming a movie, she
makes time to visit children who have expe-
rienced a loss of hearing. Matlin’s human-
itarian efforts gave her the opportunity to
speak before Congress in 1995 to support
closed captioning on all television screens
13 inches or larger. This law was passed and
because of her efforts, TV manufacturers
are required to build in chips for closed
captioning. Matlin is currently the spokes-
woman for the National Caption Institute.
