Ag program receives statewide awards
The Santa Maria High School Agricultural Program was recognized with top state awards at the 98th California Teachers Association Annual Awards Banquet .
The SMHS educators claimed the 2017 honors for Outstanding Large School Program ( 4 + teachers ) and overall Outstanding Agriculture Program in San Luis Obispo .
According to Co-department Chair Marc DeBernardi , the department ’ s application will now move on to represent California at the Division 1 level ( Western Region ) of the NAAE ( National Association of Agricultural Educators ) award program . The results of that process will be announced at the NAAE convention to be held in Nashville , Tenn ., Dec . 5-9 .
The program includes eight hardworking agricultural teachers , approximately 1,000 students taking agricultural classes , a support staff , administration , and a district office .
“ It feels great to win these awards this year ,” DeBernardi said . “ Our program has been a very good program for many years , but to be recognized by our peers as the top agriculture program in California out of 330 programs in the state is very special . We have a great community , parental support , and alumni participation , all of which contribute to a successful education model and program .’’
Designed to Disrupt : Superintendents invited to learn social media protocols and practices
Social media can augment and amplify community engagement and community access to district leaders , including members of the board of education . What processes should you have in place to help your board members monitor and engage the public voice , including often disruptive online discussions ?
Superintendents can discover best practices at the newly created workshop , Designed to Disrupt : What is your governance team protocol for managing online community discussions ? The event is a collaboration between ACSA and the law firm Fagen Friedman & Fulfrost ( F3 ), addressing three key objectives :
• Integrating social media protocols into governance retreats and bylaws .
• Strategies to ensure organizational preparedness .
• Tips for creating a school board community engagement action plan and calendar .
“ We are not focusing on how to use social media ; rather we will focus on how to deal with the waves of mis- and disinformation that social media can create in school communities , and strategies for directing people to the facts and where and how to engage in discussions about important activities in our districts ,” said Terilyn Finders , director of communications and former trustee at F3 .
Finders , former superintendent and ACSA director Barry Groves , and Namita
Brown , partner and member of F3 ’ s eMatters Practice Group , will facilitate the workshop . Attendees will leave with tips for integrating social media protocols into governance retreats and internal communications practices .
Bring your questions . Among those expected to be answered are :
• What is the role of the board president when social media is ablaze with concerns and questions ?
• Who is your “ chief listening officer ” – the person who monitors social media activity ? How does the board agree to work with this person ?
• When , how and who should be responding ?
• What steps can you take to set the pace and expectations for immediate responses ?
• What can you do to clarify when and how social media can , and must not , be used to disseminate information ?
• When must privacy rights trump the public ’ s appetite for detailed information , and what steps can you take to address concerns appropriately ?
Designed to Disrupt will convene from 8:30 a . m . until 12 p . m . in Oakland , Sept . 19 , registration at https :// goo . gl / L5e52y ; Sacramento , Sept . 20 , https :// goo . gl / S7DFRd ; and Corona , Sept . 27 , https :// goo . gl / WL9Erm .
