ENDORSE

Continued from page 1
nouncement , the vice presidents of legislative action began moving forward in the endorsement process for several legislative races throughout the state . ACSA Governmental Relations helped to narrow the field of legislative races by identifying the most important and potentially influential races .
After assessing 80 Assembly seats and 20 Senate seats , Governmental Relations brought 11 races to the VPLAs . Ultimately , they recommended five legislators for endorsement .
In ACSA Region 1 , Assembly member Brian Dahle is up for re-election . Due to a recent change in leadership in the Republican party , Dahle is now the minority leader of the Assembly . ACSA members in Region 1 have had good relationships with
Dahle and agreed that a recommendation of an endorsement in the 2018 Primary should go to the board . ACSA ’ s board approved the endorsement of Dahle , and Minority Leader Dahle will move into the November election after earning 65 percent of the vote in the June primary .
In Region 9 , Assembly member Anna Caballero is running for state Senate . Over the last decade , voter registration has slowly changed from red to blue in her district , making the election of a Democratic senator a real possibility . Caballero has a good working relationship with ACSA , and the Region 9 VPLA agreed on recommending an endorsement of Caballero to the board . The board approved the endorsement , and ACSA is happy to report that she will move forward into the November election having received 41 percent of the vote .
San Benito County Supervisor Robert Rivas is running for Assembly . The clear
fundraising leader , and a well-respected county supervisor , Rivas was the only candidate in his district to complete and return an ACSA questionnaire .
ACSA Region 10 noted that Rivas has a strong history of past collaboration with educators in the region . Rivas also indicated on his questionnaire that he looked forward to working with ACSA on teacher tenure and probationary issues . The ACSA board approved the endorsement of Rivas , and he wound up receiving 44 percent of the vote in the Primary , which moves him forward to the November election .
Newhall Board President Christy Smith is running for Assembly again , after narrowly losing to her opponent in 2016 . ACSA endorsed Smith in 2016 . Smith was ultimately the only candidate from Assembly District 38 to completed an ACSA candidate questionnaire and her responses were closely aligned with ACSA ’ s Legislative
Platform , as they were in 2016 . Region 15 strongly agreed that Smith was an easy endorsement recommendation to the board . Following the endorsement and having received enough votes in the Primary , she will move into the general election in the fall .
Finally , in Region 16 Maria Elena Durazo is running for the state Senate . Durazo is the leader in this race . She is also the only candidate to return an ACSA questionnaire in her district . Most experts agree that Durazo is a shoe-in for this seat , and it was an easy choice for ACSA to endorse her in this race . ACSA is pleased to report Durazo will easily move into the general election in the fall .
If you have any questions about the ACSA endorsement process or would like to be more involved , please reach out to ACSA ’ s Sarah Monte at smonte @ acsa . org .

Poll asks students ’ opinions on guns and school safety

Just prior to the March For Our Lives student movement , the instructional content platform Newsela conducted a poll of more than 25,000 students nationwide about gun laws and school safety .
Sixty-seven percent of those polled said they “ strongly agree ” or “ agree ” that gun laws should be stricter . Similarly , 67 percent said they strongly agree or agree that the minimum age to buy assault weapons should be raised to 21 years old .
And students are opposed to President Trump ’ s proposal to arm teachers as a safety measure . More than half , 55 percent , said they strongly disagree or disagree that teachers should be allowed to carry guns .
The remarkable political movement of students in grades 9-12 to put pressure on the country ’ s leaders after the Parkland , Fla . school shootings so impressed the Newsela ed-tech platform , the company wanted to give those students a voice on both sides of the issue . The news reading platform is used by more than 13 million students .
The poll also found that 12 percent of students have written a letter to Congress or protested the gun laws in some fashion through a march or walkout , prior to the huge March 24 protest . Nearly split , 32 percent of students said they were “ likely ” to attend a protest or write a letter to a congressperson to voice their opinion on gun regulations vs . 31 percent who said they were “ unlikely ” to do so .
