At Education Week ’ s annual Leaders to Learn From event , San Bernardino City Unified School District Superintendent Dale Marsden was singled out for honors for his extraordinary impact on the success of educators and students .
In an EdWeek article , Marsden ’ s “ foresight in emergency preparedness , his flair for personal connections , and his calm , humane style of management ” are cited as “ gifts .” The superintendent has faced armed intruders on campus twice in his five years in San Bernardino City USD .
“ Most of the work around safety is really about building the culture , and that ’ s all about relationships ,” he told EdWeek . In building those relationships , Marsden heard that stakeholders want assurance their children will be safe at school .
To that end , he worked to build health , wellness and safety into to the district ’ s strategic plan . EdWeek noted that includes healthy eating and exercise , revamped policing , expanded access to mental-health and domestic-violence support , and a “ positive discipline ” approach to misbehavior that favors discussion and problem-solving .
In addition to discovering K-12 leaders who are solving problems and driving change in school districts across the country , the April 11-12 Leaders to Learn From event at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington , D .
