Annual CA FFA Conference offers Administration Experience
The following article was written by 2018 FFA Conference Press Corp members Lyla Smelser of the Eureka FFA Chapter and Keara McVicker of the Bakersfield-Highland FFA Chapter .
The first session of the second annual California FFA Administration Experience was held April 22 in the Anaheim Convention Center . Exclusively for administrators , this experience helps provide networking opportunities for principals , counselors and superintendents alike to learn new ways to support their chapters . Each chapter and high school is different in their own unique ways . The goal of this conference is for administrators to walk away with new ideas to implement into their own schools to further support their FFA chapter and student success . Throughout the first session , FFA alumni and past state officers spoke about how the FFA organization has helped
guide their career paths and success stories . Taking place concurrently with the 90th annual California FFA State Conference , administrators got to experience the excitement of more than 7,000 California FFA members packed into one arena , ready to absorb the advice of keynote speakers , engage with special guests and listen to the addresses of the retiring 2017-18 California State FFA officer team . Being able to see so many members involved and eager
California FFA administrators pose for a shot during the second Annual California FFA Administration Experience . to better themselves is inspiring , as well as exhilarating .
Derrick Lawson , principal of Indio High School , highlighted a few of the many benefits of the FFA program in his school , saying that it “ raises the academic commitment of all students on campus because of FFA role models . Some of the best kids in our school are our FFA students .” Indio boasts an FFA program of 330 students under the expertise of two teachers .
Jeanne Utterback , principal of Fall River High School , home to the McArthur FFA chapter , was recognized this year as the State Star Administrator , an award that recognizes administrators for dedication to their chapter and the FFA as a whole . In her words , “ agricultural education creates great leadership opportunities for students . Agricultural Education is very set in practicing in class and in taking that knowledge into the community with supervised agricultural experiences .” Her Vice Principal , Kelly Freeland-Sloat , attributes their chapter ’ s success to their fabulous community support .
National FFA presents bill to amend federal charter on House floor
A new bill amending the charter of the National FFA Organization was introduced in the House by Representatives Glenn Thompson ( R-Penn .), and Jim Langevin ( D-R . I .).
The charter , which originally passed in the 1950s , publicly acknowledges the role FFA plays as an integral part of public instruction in agriculture . The FFA charter also specifies that the U . S . Department of Education provides leadership and helps set the direction for National FFA as a service to state and local agricultural programs .
The National FFA Organization
|
believes the revised federal charter will provide needed flexibility for its board of directors and allow the organization to maintain strong ties with the industry of agriculture .
The revised charter grants the board power to appoint the chair and the National FFA Advisor and provides that the FFA board consist of individuals representing education , agriculture , food and natural resources . This involvement will guarantee the relevance of agricultural education in our nation ’ s schools and prepare students to fill the 235 unique careers in agriculture .
Another proposed revision allows the
|
organization to consider an expansion of the number of national officers representing the organization ’ s growing membership , should the need be realized . Last year , FFA membership reached 653,359 in all 50 states and two U . S . territories .
“ The amendments set the stage for FFA in the 21st century and allows us to bring FFA and our operations into the future ,” said Mark Poeschl , CEO of the National FFA Organization . “ The one thing that has not changed is our commitment to the relevance that FFA and agricultural education continue to have in our nation ’ s education system . With its three integral components – classroom / laboratory instruction , supervised
|
agricultural experiences and FFA – the agricultural education model continues to push students toward a thriving future thanks to the relevant skills learned and experience obtained . These amendments will strengthen our commitment .”
The National FFA Organization provides leadership , personal growth and career success training through agricultural education to 653,359 student members who belong to one of 8,568 local FFA chapters throughout the U . S ., Puerto Rico and the U . S . Virgin Islands . The organization is also supported by 344,239 alumni members in 2,051 alumni chapters throughout the U . S .
