Impaired driving situations help teens understand risky behaviors on road

According to the Centers for Disease Control , the risk of motor vehicle crashes is higher among 16- to 19-year-olds than among any other age group .
CDC cites that in 2015 , 2,333 teens in the United States were killed and 221,313 were treated in emergency rooms for injuries suffered in crashes . That means that six teens ages 16-19 died every day from motor vehicle injuries . Per mile driven , teen drivers are nearly three times more likely than drivers 20 and older to be in a fatal crash .
Students in such schools as Santa Maria and Lompoc high schools on the central coast have taken part in the “ Arrive Alive Tour ,” learning the cold hard facts about impaired and distracted driving .
About 100 SMHS students participated Feb . 2 in the Unite program , which features two simulators and videos that create texting or drunk driving experiences . The students also take a survey , pledge , and may receive a traffic ticket to understand the consequences of their acts behind the wheel .
Texting while driving is a particular concern of the Arrive Alive Tour , since the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has determined it makes a driver 23 times more likely to crash . In addition , about a quarter of traffic accidents involve an underage drinking driver , according to the NHTSA .
The Unite Arrive Alive Tour visits campuses on all levels , from elementary all the
ACSA currently offers the New Superintendent Seminar Series for first and second-year superintendents . Together , these new superintendents learn from readings , presentations , discussions and problem-solving simulations during this highquality , year-long program .
The series is a professional learning program that has successfully assisted first- and second-year superintendents for more than 14 years . The program places participants into a yearlong cohort and tackles the current issues faced by superintendents in five workshop settings .
The five-part series begins in late summer , meets again before the fall and winter holidays , in a pre-conference at the Superintendents ’ Symposium in January , way to colleges and beyond . More information can be found at http :// arrivealivetour . com / unite .
“ This is a great opportunity for our students ,’’ said SMHS Activity Director Adrian Salazar . “ With the use of the simulator , we hope our students leave with a better understanding of the dangers and therefore make good choices .’’
The CDC has identified factors that put teens at higher risk for traffic accidents and also offers materials to help teach them to be better drivers . Risk factors include :
• Teens are more likely than older drivers to underestimate dangerous situations or not be able to recognize hazardous situations . Teens are also more likely than adults to make critical decision errors that lead to serious crashes .
• Teens are more likely than older drivers to speed and allow shorter headways – the distance from the front of one vehicle to the front of the next . The presence of male teenage passengers increases the likelihood of this risky driving behavior .
• In 2014 , 50 percent of teen deaths from motor vehicle crashes occurred between 3 p . m . and midnight and 53 percent occurred on Friday , Saturday or Sunday .
• Teens have among the lowest rates of seat belt use . In 2015 , only 61 percent of high school students reported they always wear seat belts when riding with someone else .
and closes with two sessions before May .
Directors Trudy Arriaga and John Roach work closely with ACSA staff and Symposium planners to ensure that the content extends what was learned in the academy and supports the learning at the Symposium .
These day-and-a-half seminars focus on topics that start with a refresher of the basics of the job and continue with scenarios that stretch the thinking of new superintendents .
Ethical dilemmas in board-superintendent relations are discussed and preparing for labor negotiations is a topic that generates great interest . A superintendent has to know enough about the budget to guide the board to set direction . He or she also needs to plan to communicate about the process .
• At all levels of blood alcohol concentration , the risk of involvement in a motor vehicle crash is greater for teens than for older drivers .
• Of male drivers between 15-20 years old involved in fatal crashes in 2014 , 36 percent were speeding at the time of the crash and 24 percent had been drinking .
CDC says Graduated Driver License Programs can build skills and provide driving supervision for new drivers . GDL provides longer practice periods , limits driving under high risk conditions for newly licensed drivers , and requires greater participation of parents as their teens learn to drive .
Research suggests that more comprehensive GDL programs are associated with reductions of 26 percent to 41 percent in fatal crashes and reductions of 16 percent to 22 percent in overall crashes , among 16-year-old drivers .
CDC says that when parents know their state ’ s GDL laws , they can help enforce the laws and , in effect , help keep their teen drivers safe .
The CDC ’ s GDL Planning Guide is designed to assist states to assess , develop and implement actionable plans to strengthen graduated driver licensing practices . Find it at https :// goo . gl / pL7ZSv .
Also included is information on building meeting agendas , yearly agenda calendars and how to assist the board president to run an effective and efficient meeting . Goal setting and instructional targets are addressed in relation to LCFF and LCAP , SPSA , evaluations of staff , superintendents and effective boards . Board-superintendent relations and the building of a governance team gets discussed every time the group meets .
Bonds , buildings and construction can befuddle a superintendent . Legal , architectural , financial , and communication specialists will assist in ensuring that the new superintendent understands these issues and avoids costly mistakes .
Other topics covered include : Negotiations – Setting the Stage and
