A closer look at budget proposal

Gov . Jerry Brown has released his 2018- 19 proposal for the upcoming fiscal year . As he released it , Brown emphasized during a press conference his long-standing philosophy that education is a local matter , and making progress on student achievement will not be solved in Sacramento but rather in the classroom .
His remarks focused on the theme of maintaining “ fiscal prudence ,” and encouraged the Legislature to begin budget conversations with “ precaution ,” since the state ’ s progressive tax system significantly relies on taxing the high-income earners . This is particularly relevant in light of the recent federal tax reform bill signed by President Trump in late December , as California policymakers determine what the fiscal impact will be to the state . ACSA endorses Tuck for SPI

The Association of California School Administrators , representing more than 17,000 California education leaders , announced Jan . 17 its endorsement of Marshall Tuck in the 2018 statewide election for the position of superintendent of public instruction .
“ Tuck ’ s vision for California schools is consistent with ACSA ’ s commitment to putting the interests of students above all ,” said ACSA President Lisa Gonzales . “ Every one of his guiding principles maintains the objective of prioritizing California students .”
Tuck was the founding CEO of the nonprofit Partnership for Los Angeles Schools , a collaboration between Los Angeles city government and L . A . Unified School District to advance nearly 20 struggling schools serving 15,000 students . Under Tuck ’ s leadership , the partnership raised four-year graduation rates by more than 60 percent and had the highest academic improvement among California ’ s school systems with more than 10,000 students .
Tuck ’ s educational agenda is built upon creating an equitable experience for students throughout California . Tuck served as president of the nonprofit Green Dot Public Schools , where he helped create 10 new public charter high schools in some of Los Angeles ’ poorest neighborhoods .

ACSA ’ s premier event for classified education leaders is fast-approaching . The 2018 Classified Educational Leaders Institute is set for March 1-2 at the Crowne Plaza in Redondo Beach .
As always , the annual CEL Institute is an opportunity for leaders in all areas of classified service to come together , share information and learn about the issues that affect education . This year , the theme is “ Growing Stronger Together .”
ACSA state CEL Council Chair and event planning leader Jeanette McDonald said the institute is right for leaders in business , fiscal services , human resources , operations , maintenance and custodial , technology , student services and confidential administrative jobs .

Call for proposals . A call for proposals has been issued for the CLEAR Spring Institute , Intentional Activism : Moving Leaders Beyond Courageous Conversations , March 9 in Fresno . All proposals must involve a leadership perspective focused on social justice actions and cultural proficiency strategies that bring long-term and sustainable individual , team , community and institutional change . Write for Leadership . ACSA members are reminded that Feb . 9 is the deadline to submit articles for consideration in the May / June 2018 edition of Leadership magazine , focusing on Education Technology / School Innovations . Ideas for topics include non-traditional ways of solving issues , budgeting innovations , stand-out leadership styles , creativity in education , Maker Spaces , 1:1 implementation , preparing students for jobs that don ’ t yet exist , technology as an instructional tool , and improvement science . As of last count , more than 70 people have been signed up to attend , and a couple of regions aren ’ t even in that mix . McDonald said , “ If you can ’ t send a team , at least send one person from business and HR .” These are key positions that share a lot of concerns and need to communicate regularly .
The institute is also a good place to gain inspiration and motivation . This year , keynote speakers include Shelley Burgess of “ Lead Like a Pirate ” fame and Kevin Honeycutt , a former at-risk student who became a transformational teacher , and now shares the stories of students who find their way out of darkness to make their own light . Honeycutt will also discuss the challenges of school bullying and cyber-bullying .
