signage, and " Milky Way Lookouts " with digital booking systems. These enhancements transform assets into nightready infrastructure, signalling that the council is prepared to support the industry. Regional parks that sit unused at night can become outdoor education hubs for schools and visitors, supporting community learning while activating public spaces after dark.
THE ECONOMIC CASE: WHY THIS MATTERS NOW Market data shows dark-sky tourism is no longer niche. According to Booking. com, 62 per cent of global travellers are considering dark-sky destinations. The global nocturnal tourism market is projected to grow at 9.2 per cent annually, reaching USD $ 25 billion by 2035.
For regional councils, overnight visitation is key. Research shows 85 per cent of dark-sky tourists stay overnight, spending an average of $ 486 per trip. International precedents are clear: New Zealand’ s Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve saw a 40 per cent visitor increase in its first year, and Northumberland Dark Sky Park in the UK delivered £ 25 million in economic benefits.
In Australia, Warrumbungle and Winton have already sparked measurable growth. Astro-tourism also fills the " off-peak " gap; it is a winter activity with clearer skies and a summer activity where visitors enjoy the cool night air. For governments facing budget constraints, it is low-cost, highimpact, and defensibly aligned with global demand.
PATTERNS FROM THE FIELD Success relies on starting small, testing interest and scaling. Thriving governments see operators as partners, removing barriers so private businesses can lead.
Community ownership is also essential; when residents understand the value of dark skies for tourism and wellbeing, protection becomes a community commitment.
Critically, First Nations astronomy offers a depth no other region can replicate. Incorporating this knowledge respectfully, following the leadership of Traditional Owners and genuine codesign, creates a point of difference uniquely tied to place.
Finally, governments that treat astrotourism as a formal economic development opportunity move faster. In Bhutan, understanding this impact allowed us to design training and experiences in a fraction of the usual time.
CONCLUSION The night sky will always be there. The question is whether regions position themselves to benefit or watch opportunities move elsewhere. Astrotourism is an invitation for visitors to gather beneath the stars and see regions differently.
The story of astro-tourism is deeper than what can be outlined in the space of this article, but if you remember, you don’ t need to build an observatory; you only need to see the night sky as an asset and remove the barriers preventing private operators from thriving. Do that, and the future becomes visible.
