Case Study : Enabling the community to better leverage events
Recognising the opportunity to gain more economic benefit out of events held in the shire , East Gippsland Shire Council also developed three toolkits to help businesses and community groups identify ways to leverage events for financial gain , and to help event organisers maximise benefits for the community from their events . 23
East Gippsland Shire Council ’ s Leveraging Events Toolkit
MEASURING THE ECONOMIC VALUE OF EVENTS When supporting events to increase their economic benefit , it should go without saying that goals should be set . Examples of measures of economic success for events include
- Total visitor expenditure , and average visitor expenditure .
- Total expenditure by overnight visitors , and average overnight visitor expenditure .
- The number of visitors or overnight visitors attracted ( where average attendee expenditure is unknown ).
- Total visitor nights or average length of stay ( where average attendee expenditure is unknown ).
- Economic output ( inputs : outputs ) i . e . how much event organisers spent in the local economy versus how much visitors spent . 24
Case study : Measuring outcomes from events
The regional tourism organisation Tourism Greater Geelong & The Bellarine identified that attracting business events to attract mid-week visitation and address seasonality was one of the region ’ s greatest opportunities . 25 After implementing tactics to deliver on this opportunity , the organisation reported it had attracted or acquired 24 midweek business events with a combined economic value of $ 2.4 million . 26
Hopefully understanding the value of events for regional economies , and the many pragmatic ways to increase the economic benefits of events for your community , has inspired you to better leverage your region ’ s events , and measure and report on your successes !
