and nonfinancial losses experienced by the residents and businesses located in five areas in the Sounds , including French Pass , Kenepuru ( including Queen Charlotte Drive ), Pelorus , and Port Underwood .
The survey was designed with a focus of unveiling various changes in life that the local community ( divided into two groups – households and businesses ) experienced before and after the storm events . This was achieved by covering multiple key aspects and topics that are closely related to peoples ’ daily life , including demographic profile , travel needs , ( household or business ) income level , education , ( physical and mental ) health , and ( residential and business ) property – typically not captured through top-down approach .
The survey questionnaire contained diverse question types ( i . e ., scoring questions , open-ended questions , and multiple choice or multiple answers ), serving different purposes and allowing for collection of a wide range of data and insights . The primary data collected , namely stated-preference data , then went onto inform the initial assessment of infrastructure response options .

Apart from the survey , a series of targeted stakeholder engagement and consultation were arranged to collect supplementary feedback from key stakeholders , including Iwi ( Maori indigenous group ) and representatives of the local industries ( i . e ., forestry , aquaculture , tourism , and farming industries ), public sector and private sector .
Responses to the survey and feedback collected from the stakeholder engagement sessions formed one part of the information then fed into project optioneering through a standard Multi- Criteria Analysis ( MCA ) process , facilitating the selection of a preferred option from a range of candidate options .
